U.S. Cellular Selects iPhonebook™ Wireless BREW Application
To Help Make Customer's Lives Easier
iPhonebook To Wirelessly Link Address
and Phone Number Information to U.S. Cellular easyedgeSM Subscribers
San Jose, California - October 1, 2003
- U.S Cellular, (AMEX: USM) one of the nation's largest wireless
service carriers, and Xpherix Corporation, the leader in personalized
mobile connectivity, today announced that iPhonebook is now
available through U.S. Cellular's newly-launched easyedge
Enhanced Wireless Phone Service. iPhonebook wirelessly links
content from Microsoft Outlook®, Outlook Express®
or Palm ™ software to mobile phones.
U.S. Cellular selected iPhonebook for
trials earlier this year as the company began exploring the
types of applications it would later launch on it's newly
designed BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) platform,
easyedge Enhanced Wireless Phone Service.
"At U.S. Cellular, we understand
that our customers want technically superior products and
services that compliment their lifestyles," said John
Cregier, senior director of data services and strategy for
U.S. Cellular. "We believe iPhonebook will help our customers
more easily maintain and access contact information on their
wireless handsets."
"iPhonebook reflects the desires
of the busy mobile professional, working parents, and anyone
who needs access to contact information when away from the
office or home," said Nick Walker, Xpherix president
and CEO. "With iPhonebook, no longer will people need
to carry multiple PIM devices, tolerate manual entry, or miss
making important calls because they don't have proper contact
information. We are pleased that U.S. Cellular is making iPhonebook
easily available to its more than 4.3 million customers."
iPhonebook offers one-device convenience
for all personal address book phone numbers. The wireless
phone display can also be used to browse other personal address
book content such as addresses, email addresses and the Notes
field, eliminating the need to carry electronic organizers,
laptops or bulky address books. Additionally, the Download
Contacts feature enables users to populate the phone's built-in
phonebook automatically with contacts from the desktop PIM.
With easyedge, U.S. Cellular customers will enjoy more than
60 easy-to-use applications that will make daily life easier
and more entertaining. The easyedgeSM Phone Service launch
will occur on a staggered schedule that includes east Tennessee
and Iowa in September; Wisconsin, Chicago, and central/western
Illinois in October; and Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Indiana
and New England in November.
Service for the company's remaining markets
will launch as next generation network upgrades occur. By
the end of 2003, U.S. Cellular will provide this service to
more than 75 percent of its customers.
